The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on where you are in life and where you want to go and I’ve taken a LOT of time over the last 12 months to better understand the real motivation behind the things I do in the hope of learning something to help guide my progress.
This has led me to think more deeply about my purpose in life and although I’ve probably shied away from this in the past as being too touchy-feely for me, I’ve found it very interesting to consider thinking around how to make sure the areas where I invest time and effort fit into some higher purpose.
This has been a lengthy process and has taken me to ideas I hadn’t considered before. But it has also been extremely worthwhile and has really helped me, for example, manage my emotions to accept the ebb and flow of day-to-day motivation, feel comfortable with choices on how I use my time and being able to live life more in the present (rather than overly focus on the past or the future).
How does this relate to coaching? For me this is right in the wheelhouse of helping people stay motivated and focused on the right goals. I wouldn’t recommend diving into a new coaching interaction with a discussion about someone’s higher purpose but I do think going through this process yourself and using what you learn to find ways to help people (including yourself) manage the emotional impact of choosing to live a life committed to learning and personal growth (are you really sure why you invest so much of your time in this?) can only be a good thing.
I know this isn’t for everyone but either way I’m hoping finding new ways to help others reach for their potential is on your list of priorities for 2022!!
