After 10 years of running our coaching business, what’s the best thing I’ve learned?

You often see it.  Someone hits a milestone that stimulates some, what did I learn along the way… reflection. This often leads to a list of.. my top tips.. which people are keen to share.

Our coaching business is now 10 years old and I’ve been thinking about what I would share with someone if they asked what I’ve learned (I know you didn’t ask but I’m going to tell you anyway 😊).

I do love top tips but what I often find is that while they are usually all relevant, any standalone nugget of good advice in coaching is VERY depended on each individual.

So for me the learning over the last 10 years of coaching has been the importance of establishing, what’s really going on here?  For example..

  • What’s the real reason they’re sharing this story of success?
  • Do they really not know what to do or are they worried how it might feel if they share their ideas and it’s not what they end up doing?
  • What am I bringing to the session today – energy and being present or is this a session too far for me and I’m trying too hard to be helpful?

I’ve found that focusing on better understanding what each person brings to the interaction (especially the coach!!) means that how I need to respond is much clearer.  Sometimes I get this right but sometimes the approach I take could undoubtedly be better – a VERY useful source of feedback for things I can work on over the next 10 years!!
